What’s in My Hospital Bag

I, like most first time Mom’s, Googled and asked friends what I need in my hospital bag. I don’t like to overpack, but I also don’t want to under pack and not be prepared.

I have my Samsonite hand luggage for my hospital bag and then my Jeankelly Nappy bag, for Baby G’s bag. I’m going to do two separate blog posts so that it’s not too overwhelming.

I created my very first stop motion video, which was quite fun to make! Granted, it took me a good 2 hours to create this 1 minute video – hahaha. I still have lots to learn but I hope you like it.

OK, so let’s begin with what I’m taking to the hospital for me.

Clothes:

  1. Pajamas. I have 2x long sleeve, button up nighties (easy access for breastfeeding) from Woolworths and also 2x strappy breastfeeding nighties, because I know it can be really hot in the wards. The one is from Cotton On and MamaMeah.
  2. A fluffy, warm robe.
  3. Slippers and Havaianas that I can just slip on.
  4. Nursing Bras. H&M, Cotton On and Woolworths have lovely ranges.
  5. Panties. I bought the Cariwell Maternity mesh panties that hold the Maternity Pads and I also bought high waisted panties that are good for my C-section cut and also hold my tummy in a little.)
  6. Arriving/ Going Home outfit. I’ll probably wear the same Maternity dress and jacket I arrive in, home (it will still be clean as I’ll arrive and change into a hospital gown.) My tummy will still look like I’m pregnant from the swelling of a C-section, plus it takes a while for your Uterus to go back to normal, so I’m not bringing pants or jeans.

Toiletries: I got the large Lou Harvey cosmetic bag in Olivia Blue print. I love that it fits everything.

  1. Toothbrush and toothpaste.
  2. Fragrance free deodorant. I’ve chosen a fragrance free one, so that Baby G can get used to my natural scent and not a perfumed one.
  3. Letibalm –  a great repair balm for lips and nose, since my lips dry out so badly in hospital.
  4. Face wipes.
  5. Face cloth and Exuviance face wash.
  6. Exuviance Toner and cotton pads.
  7. Exuviance Moisturiser.
  8. Clarins Eye cream.
  9. Wella Shampoo and Conditioner (in case, although I think my reality will be #10.)
  10. Travel size dry shampoo.
  11. Travel size body wash.
  12. Nipple Pads – Bamboobies and I have the Pigeon disposables.
  13. Nipple Cream – Mama Mio.
  14. Maternity Pads. I’ve bought the Cariwell, the Clicks and even Night time pads, but I’m obviously not taking them all with me. I’ll take the Cariwell, and keep the others for at home.
  15. Tangle Teezer hairbrush, hair clips and invisibobble hair bands.
  16. Make-up bag: I was in 2 minds about this, but I figured that if I look good; I’ll feel good and vice versa. I might not even have time to, nor want to put make-up on, but I’d rather bring a small bag than ask Sox to pack one for me – which could be hilarious. I have my Vichy Eau spray, MAC tinted moisturizer, Chanel CC cream, LOV blush (so I don’t look too pale), a Catrice eyebrow pencil and Benefit eyebrow wand, mascara and my Clarins Lip Oil. I’ve chosen products for some coverage, for my eyebrows and to hydrate my lips and give a little natural colour, rather than full eye make up.

Miscellaneous:

  1. iPad and iPhone – I have audio books and my Kindle app.
  2. iPhone charger and double adapter (hospitals don’t usually have 2 pin plug points, so be prepared.)
  3. Camera and charger
  4. Headphones. These are from Sudio. Get 15% off by using my code: VANILLABLONDE15
  5. Journal and pen. I want to write down everything that happens. Everyone says the days are a blur and you forget so much, so I’ll bullet point journal things that happen. This is my journal I’ve kept from the day I found out I was pregnant.
  6. Folder with: ID Book, Medical Aid card and other important documents.
  7. Vitamins and my natural supplement for constipation. You won’t be able to leave the home without ensuring your tummy has worked, so I’ll take these with me.
  8. Speaking of… a packet of prunes + other snacks (not photographed.)

I don’t think I’ve forgotten anything, but if I have, won’t you please leave a comment below so that I can add to it.

Hi Bailey! This is so exciting! I love reading about your pregnancy journey! I had my little boy last year October and I think you have just about everything that I did. Just something to add for the important documents part – I took certified copies of mine and my husbands ID for home affairs (they register the birth at the hospital), but they also asked for our marriage certificate. So you might want to include a copy of that too, if they provide that service at the hospital!
Oh, and there is one other thing… when your milk comes in, it is quite painful. Like really. And if Little One is asleep and it is 1am and you are sitting in tears and all the nurses tell you to do is feed him, but he’s asleep, so you can’t (yes that was me), you will be very grateful for those booby ice packs. Cabbage leaves work well too but are a bit stinky and might go a bit funny in your bag :). Next time, I will find some of those ice packs and pack those first!

Thanks Cara – so exciting and daunting all at the same time!
The important documents include the copies of IDs and marriage certificate and so on 🙂
Ah yes, I’ve seen those ice packs, but I didn’t know to get them. OK great – I’ll put them on the list. Hahaha, I feel like my list is never ending!

And bring wet wipes, loads, for changing poo nappies. And baby nappies? Or does the hospital provide? Or is that all in the baby bag? Lol.
    Eeeek good luck.

Hehehe, this is just my hospital bag – for Mom. I mentioned that I’ll be doing 2 blog posts – one with Baby G’s bag, otherwise it’s too overwhelming

Hi Bailey, I Love your blogs about your pregnancy, I so wish we were pregnant at the same time, Your blogs would have helped me so much. HAHA 🙂 I had my little boy in September last year and you pretty much have everything. Just a tip though, pack in some of your normal/night time pads. I hated using the Carriwell ones, so I was happy I had alternatives. I found them super uncomfortable. Enjoy this final stretch. Before you know it you will have your baby boy in your arms 🙂

Hi Bailey. Awesome list. Will be referring here in a few months when baby number 2 arrives. I would also add clothes for when u leave the hospital. Some leggings and oversized shirt maybe. Enjoy the last weeks! It gets real very soon! Xxx

Hi Bailey. I would take an extension cord for phone charger…. the plugs in hospital are sometimes far from bed and as you are going to be a bit sore for c section its quite useful.
Take a water bottle. When you start breastfeeding in hospital you will be SOOO thirsty and also consider taking like protein bars because you will get hungry at like odd times of the day.
I laughed at the make up that you said you are taking with…I also took mine with and didn’t even bother. All the moms look the same (tired but loved up) and believe me it will be the last thing on your mind.

So exciting! You sound so organized. Get Sox to make and bring you some Jungle Juice in hospital (helps with bringing on the milk), and have some nice soft tissues handy, it’s a very emotional few days!

Personally, I WAY over packed for myself and babies. I literally had all the baby clothes x 2 in individual plastic bags, all labeled haha. Ty didn’t wear any as he went straight to NICU and into hospital kit and I can even remember what Max wore (you right, it is a blur) haha!

Do you have a belly binder for after your c-section? I found that quite helpful in terms of mobility afterwards. My little boy was in NICU for 3 very long weeks so I don’t remember much. PTSD. But one thing I do remember was the terrible terrible swollen feet post op. It’s so uncomfortable. I could not wear anything but slippers. I wondered if it was just me but I believe it’s quite common. You may want to watch out for that.

All the best for the most exciting time of your life. You’re going to be such wonderful parents xxx

Hey Michelle, I do have a belly binder but I’ll put that on at home I think 🙂 The hospital gives us compression socks for potential swelling so that’s good! Thanks for the comment and well wishes! So excited

Hi B, this might seem ridiculous but, you can also use your journal to track baby G’s feeds and diapers. Believe me you’ll be so busy admiring him you’ll completely forget how many times he’s pood, or what breast he last drank from and for how long when a nurse or dr suddenly asks. There is an amazing app called “baby tracker” that you can download on the apple store. It even has a built in timer!
