Heritage Day 2013

I hope all South African’s had an awesome holiday yesterday. It was our Heritage Day. Originally it was called Shaka Day, in commemoration of the Zulu King Shaka.

The 24th of September is the day we take the day to celebrate out cultures, our traditions, our beliefs and our diversity – after all, we are the rainbow nation with 11 different languages.

In the recent years, it has also been known as Braai Day – pretty fitting as it is probably one of our best South African traditions.

If you aren’t from South Africa, a braai is a barbecue. We do it all the time. It’s our social “go to” and it’s quite the feast, casually and not so casually.

If you aren’t from South Africa you say braai – like this b-rye.

Yesterday my boyfriend and I went for a 5km walk on the promenade before heading over to friends for a braai and boy did we eat… We had chops, steak, chicken sosaties, the most delicious salads, butternut, beetroot and garlic bread. Ahem… I cannot believe I didn’t take a photo of the food. Slacking.
