Every year we have the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge. It is 94.7 km (I did a rough conversion… it’s about 59 miles) bicycle race through the streets of Johannesburg.
It is one of the biggest cycling races in the world and we’re very proud to be a part of it.
Every year there are road closures to keep the cyclists and motorists safe… it’s an amazing operation and I love being behind the scenes because I really get to experience how the authorities in this amazing city work and how they all work together. It’s incredible.
I was up at 3am on Sunday and at the Waterfall Country Estate at 4am. I was situated in the JOC – Joint Operations Centre where I sat reporting traffic live on 94.7 Highveld Stereo. I sat amongst our South African Police Service, our Metro traffic cops, Off Road Rescue, Netcare 911, Think Bike, ADT Security, Altech Netstar tracking and so on. I felt like I was in Special Ops. Next year I want my own walkie-talkie. Kidding. Kind of.

My traffic desk where I reported LIVE from the JOC. Please note the number of cups of coffee I have around me. 4am is EARLY… |

The weather was also perfect for the cyclists. It wasn’t too hot and it was overcast.
I had the opportunity to go up in the helicopter… It is beautiful to see our city from the air. We really do live in the greenest city in the world.

About to go up in the chopper with Pilot Kevin |

Well done to everyone who attempted, who completed and who supported the race. It really was a brilliantly organized, incredible day!
Here’s to next year… who knows…maybe I’ll even be on a bike. I have always said I’d like to do it just once. I think I should attempt it, properly this time.
