Part of me doesn’t even want to say this, because some of you might be new to my blog and not know this little secret, but here goes…
I used to smoke.
Gross, right? I’m so glad I can say that in past tense. I honestly feel like it was a lifetime ago. I quit cold turkey 4 years ago and have never looked back. I always said that my reward for quitting smoking would be teeth whitening. I’ve shied away from it though, because my teeth are really sensitive and I had only heard that teeth whitening made sensitivity worse. Not the case if you are using good products.
I was really nervous. My teeth are so sensitive that a normal teeth cleaning hurts me. Emma assured and reassured me that she would monitor everything and that I would be fine.
Here I am before… And the Oscar goes to… Look how “calm” I look. I was anything but.She started with a teeth clean and I kept anxiously waiting to feel that sharp shooting twinge, but she was so gentle and I felt nothing. Nothing! Amazing!
I started to relax, my knuckles weren’t white clutching the dentist chair anymore and she started preparing the teeth whitening.
First she put a device in my mouth to open up my cheeks and expose my teeth. It wasn’t uncomfortable at all.
Next, Emma blocked out my gums with this white/greyish liquid that hardened under a light. Once my teeth were prepped, she started applying the whitening gel. She put the light into position and set the timer. She said that if I felt any sensitivity, I should let her know and she’d move the light away and it would immediately go away. She’d also monitor the strength. In the first few minutes I was nervous in anticipation – waiting for that horrific twinge. I felt absolutely nothing and so I relaxed again – those knuckles gained colour again. Before long, the timer beeped and she was rinsing off the gel and then reapplying. We did this 3 times. I only felt a tiny bit of sensitivity on my bottom front teeth towards the very end and that was only because she had bumped up the strength. She immediately pulled the strength of the light down and I was fine again.
When we were all done, she rinsed the gel off, pulled off the hardened white gum blocker, I rinsed my mouth out and Emma applied a sensitivity gel. She warned me that my teeth might be sensitive for the first 24 hours and after that, I’d be 100% fine.
The only sensitivity I felt were on my 2 front bottom teeth and every now and then I’d get that sensitive twinge. I used the sensitive toothpaste and in less than 24 hours, the sensitivity was gone.
For the first 24 hours I wasn’t allowed any coffee or tea, which was the hardest. I wasn’t allowed any red wine, red wine, tomatoes or anything that could stain my teeth. The best analogy was anything that could be dropped onto a white tee shirt and would stain, I shouldn’t eat or drink.
I am beyond impressed and my teeth look so much whiter, instantly. Look…I’ve got some trays that have been made from moulds of my teeth so that I can top up at home and I only need to have another check up in 6 months.
If I had known that it was this pain free, barring the 24 hours afterwards – where it’s slightly sensitive, but not unbearable, I would have done this AGES ago! I am so thrilled I finally had this done and I want you to have gorgeous pearly whites too! They’re country wide and if you want to find out more details, check out the website: www.zoomwhitening.co.za and click on Find a Dentist, to find someone near you.
