World Hunger Day

Yesterday was World Hunger Day.

I got involved with Hudsons The Burger Joint – one of my favourites and helped them with their donation of 100 Burgers and chips to a homeless shelter called Haven Night Shelter in Napier Street.

This is taken off their Facebook page:

The Haven Night Shelter at Napier Street is specially focused on adults. Our aim is to get homeless people to a home. We give them all the love and care we can give. As long as the live at our place, we support them with developing their own personal development plan.

To make temporary shelter, rehabilitation opportunities, social welfare services, family reunification services, physical care and support available to adult people living on the streets who are committed to reintegration.

To partner and co operate with religious institutions, organisations, welfare bodies, service providers, businesses, government departments, local authorities and individuals concerned with the care and welfare of the destitute.

To promote community awareness of the social problems arising out of destitution and to encourage the participation of the public in the alleviation of such problems.

To reduce the opportunities for people to continue to live on the streets.

It was an fantastic to see all the smiles in the Hudsons kitchen as the burgers and chips were made and packaged.

We popped them into boxes and headed off to the shelter.

We met Jerry and Edna, who look after the shelter. They explained how the shelter works and what is needed. Regulations only allow them to look after 100 people a night and sometimes people have to be turned away because of lack of space or food or resources.

The shelter is for people who want to be helped and want to leave the streets to be reintegrated into society and reconnected with their families and loved ones.

The Hudsons caps have the different burger names on them.

To see the smiles and the gratitude… it was beyond humbling.

I made a quick video using my GoPro:

Well done Hudsons! Here’s hoping that other restaurants take you up on your challenge. Thanks for letting me join you.
