I had my DNA analysed by the company, DNAlysis and it was pretty fascinating!
You get various DNA tests, like hereditary tests and so on, but the ones I did with DNAlysis was all for my health.
The little box was delivered to my place of work, with pretty clear and easy instructions.
Make sure you do the test during office hours (you don’t want to do it overnight.) You need to call the company to pick up your DNA test so that it can be taken straight to the lab.
Fill in the forms and tick which DNA tests you want done. These are the options:
Inside the box is a little swab kit… it looks like a long ear bud in a test tube.Open the lid, swab the inside of your cheek for about 1 minute and then pop it back in the tube, tighten the lid and make the call.
I received my results within a week and I couldn’t wait to have the consultation with one of the DNAlysis experts.
Jessica Pieterse and I had a Skype call where we went through my results thoroughly. I found it fascinating. Many of my results were either eye opening or confirmed what I already thought, which was comforting. The detail I received was intricate and interesting and not difficult to understand at all.
I think the most FAQ is: I can’t change my genes, so what does it matter that I find out about them?
Jessica explained it so well. Genetics are like a loaded gun. Your lifestyle pulls the trigger.
Some of my results I found most fascinating:
It confirmed that I should be eating a Mediterranean Diet, and that carbohydrates don’t metabolise as well as they should. It was so comforting to know this, especially because I’ve struggled with finding a weight loss, weight maintenance solution, until I discovered the LCHF lifestyle a few years ago. Of course, when I started it, everyone said I was going to die of a heart attack, but it’s honestly the only thing that works for my body, and seeing it genetically confirmed was fantastic.
Another fascinating fact is that I am on the low scale of Obesity Risk. Genetically I shouldn’t be obese, so if I am, it will be purely lifestyle. Good to know.
This was by fay my most eye-opening result and I’ll explain why…
My whole life I’ve convinced myself that I am a sweet tooth and that’s why I struggle with sugar addiction. I used it as an excuse. I do believe that sugar has a biological affect on the body and I certainly do get addicted to (genetically I have an addictive personality – also confirmed.)
Seeing the result be moderate came as a huge surprise, because I was expecting it to be in the high range. This knowledge has given me power. Knowing this has helped me tremendously curb my sugar intake.
Before I used it as an excuse, like: “Oh well, I’m just a massive sweet tooth! What can I do?” However, now that I know genetically I don’t really have much of a sweet tooth, has given me more willpower to cut sugar and in my head I’m like: “Well, I’m not really much of a sweet tooth, so I don’t really need the sugar.”
What a massive change mentally. Since 01 October 2018, I’ve been sugar free (barring the 24th and 25th December – don’t even get me started on how sick I felt) and for the first time in my life, it has been so much easier to quit. Knowledge is power for sure.
I am genetically prone to Methylation and Inflammation.
B vitamins provide building blocks for growing cells, which are constantly being renewed, and play an important role in many physiological processes. B vitamins also supply some of the chemicals necessary for protecting our genes, so that DNA doesn’t accumulate damage from the wear and tear in the daily lives of our cells. These vitamins – including folate, vitamins B6 and B12 – help make new DNA for cells that are constantly growing and renewing themselves. B vitamins are also involved in turning many genes on and off, and also help repair DNA. Methylation is the DNA repair process. I now know to take Methylated Vitamin B and Folate to help my DNA repair itself and lead a healthier life on a cellular level. What a game changer.
To aid inflammation, I need to up my Omega 3. Again, genetically it showed that my body doesn’t metabolise Flaxseed oil well, so it’s better to opt for the fish oils. Funny enough it confirmed something I’d never been able to pinpoint. Whenever I’ve eaten Flax seeds or taken flax seed oil I have been physically sick. Now I know why. So interesting.
I didn’t need a genetic test to show these results. I am not meant to be an athlete. Haha!
However, this is really great to do for those who are athletes, or even just running races. If you are prone to injury (like I am) and slow to recover, then you can know how to train and what to do. Again, knowledge is power.
This also confirmed what I already knew… I’m the girl who can go to bed with a cup of tea and fall asleep straight after.
I wanted to show you a few of my results. It’s a tiny peep into them. The results are far more detailed and you get loads of information, which has been so helpful.
Having my DNA tested allows me to make the necessary lifestyle changes to stay healthy. It is so worth it.
