Today is Mandela Day! Happy Birthday in Heaven, Nelson Mandela!
Madiba fought for social justice for 67 years, so in honour of him, this day is reserved for serving others for 67 minutes.
This day is more than a celebration of his life and legacy. It is a global movement to honour his life’s work and act to change the world for the better.
No matter how small the action, Mandela Day is about changing the world for the better.
Yesterday, I spent the morning with the children from Home of Hope at the Shimmy Beach Club for #67minutesofplay.
Home of Hope is a registered NPO that provides care for abused and abandoned children in South Africa and those affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). FASD is the permanent brain damage that a child suffers when they are exposed to alcohol before birth.
It was such a beautiful day of clear blue skies and sunshine. The kids indulged in candy floss, popcorn, chicken strips and chips. They had their arms stencilled with tattoos and there were jumping castles, play areas and balloons from Cape Town Balloons. These children were full of smiles and laughter and I got to meet some really special souls, like Richard, Nikita, Alex, Simba, Anna Marie and Angel who stole my heart. I knew I would be there for a lot longer than just the 67 minutes and I had great fun.
Thank you Birgitte Willers and the team at Shimmy Beach Club, for throwing such a lovely party for them and for having me be a part of it.
