I’m thankful for the day I met Mark Grobbelaar in 2011. I actually can’t believe it’s been 5 years. Wow! He introduced me to Woman INpowered. WIP is not a self defence course in the typical sense of the word. It is, however, life changing and empowering. I love that it’s called Woman InPowered, because once you complete this course you feel like you stand in your own power.
I’ve done self defence courses before and to be honest, unless years of martial arts are perfected, you just can’t know what situation you might find yourself in. Trying to remember several things to do if XYZ or ABC happens, is far too stressful.
This course teaches you one thing to remember. It’s powerful, impactful. Most importantly it also teaches you that you have a choice.
What I really liked was how Mark started the course.
He asked a few of us individually: “Can you change a tyre?”
“No. Sadly I can’t.”
Mark: “You can! You’ve just never been shown how to. You can defend yourself, I just need to show you how.”
That was so impactful because it resonated with me in so many aspects of my life. We can do anything with the knowledge and if we can’t, go in search of the knowledge.
The WIP course was riveting, inspiring and even though I pray I will never ever have to use this information, I have never ever forgotten it and I’m thankful for this knowledge! Knowledge is power.
“It will never happen to me” is something we all naturally think, but I’m thankful that I have the knowledge should that statement not ring true.
Here I am in 2011… I was number 226. Since then, over 1300 women have been INPowered.
It makes me feel safer in knowing that a.) I have a choice and b.) I can protect myself and give myself a chance.
After the course, I became a WIP Ambassador, also knows as WIP Angels, something I’m very proud to be. Look, I even have the cap and t-shirt to prove it! Haha! 😉
I wish every company and every school would get Mark to do the course – I wish everyone had this knowledge! I’d even suggest that you get a bunch of your girlfriends together and swap out Book Club/Wine Club for a WIP course! Chat to Mark, tell him I sent you! He travels country wide.

It is definitely a great idea and a great initiative. If it was more accessible I would definitely do it but they rely on me to bring in the people. I live in a city where my friends and family don’t so I would have to try and appeal to strangers to participate. Easier said than done in Cape Town. If he did more structured workshops I would be there in a heart beat!! I continue to follow on all their social media in the hopes that one day there will be a class I can join.
