Scar Hair

I don’t get to do my hair as often as I used to. However, when I do get the chance, it gets me so excited that I literally count down the days until it’s “hair day!”

Scar Hair has always taken amazing care of my hair since moving to Cape Town. It’s never been healthier, thicker or longer, naturally.

I actually had a woman come up to me in a shopping mall – a complete stranger – introduce herself to me and say that she follows me on Instagram. After some polite small talk, she said to me, “Sorry, but I’m so curious…” and in one quick motion, she stuck her hand in my head and gave my scalp a scratch. Well, I was so taken aback that I jumped back alarmed. “What are you doing?”

She immediately looked so embarrassed and tried to quickly explain: “I’m really sorry, but I wanted to know if that’s all your own hair or if you wear hair extensions.”

In hindsight, she could have just asked and I’d have happily parted my hair and shown her. It was definitely the strangest thing to happen to me in a long time and I suppose I should take it as a compliment.

Ever since becoming a Mom, I have moved away from the very light, almost platinum blonde colour to a more natural blonde – an ombre, balayage. When my hair grows out I can’t stand the dark halo – it really doesn’t look good, so I wanted a darker root that was still considered blonde, but more to my natural dark blonde so that it looked more natural in between hair dresser appointments.

This time, I saw Andre. We chatted about the look I was hoping to achieve, even pulled out Pinterest inspiration and came up with a plan. We would do a root shadow and then tone the rest of my hair ombre. We also did a front ribbon highlight just to frame my face with some light.

Pre-Mom Bailey truly took for granted the few hours of time for myself – sipping hot tea, paging through international fashion and home decor magazines and just being pampered. I pushed the Mom guilt out of my mind and sank into the utter bliss, reminding myself that me-time is really crucial. When I look good, I feel good and vice versa.

Look back at that photo… see the mug of tea? I love that it’s printed for mirrors. It’s backwards when you look at it, but look in the mirror and it’s readable. Clever for all those mirror selfies.

It’s amazing to me how I still get a little anxious when I see the colour wet… it always looks so dark, but I know to trust the amazing stylists (artists) at Scar.

After the most melt worthy, glorious head massage, that I secretly didn’t want to end; it was off to get the blow wave and a 4cm trim.

We decided to add a little wave to really see the dimension of the colour and I am thrilled.

I really love the darker blonde – it’s still light enough for me, but it feels more mature than the Barbie blonde.

Using the right shampoos, conditioners, heat protectors have also really change the condition of my hair. I use the Wella System Professional Range, which keeps my colour looking amazing and really treats my hair.

I alternate between using the combo of Repair Shampoo and Hydrate Conditioner and then the combo of Hydrate Shampoo and Repair Hydrate. I’ve been trying to leave my hair to naturally dry and ease off on the heat, but as we’re going into Winter it’s getting harder to do that. I use the Sebastian Trilliant Heat Protector for when I use the hairdryer and my curling wand.

Scar is also selling the Moyoko Smoothing & Detangling hairbrush, so I wanted to try that because my wavy hair can get really knotty and tangled.

Some of the things I love:

  • It’s curved so it really fits to the scalp.
  • The brush pins contain Argan oil, which adds softness and shine.
  • The silicone bristles help detangle the hair and reduce frizz.
  • Use it wet/dry.

I love how they randomly throw in afrikaans words like ‘prentjies’ and ‘die winkel’ on their site.
