There are days when I just feel like switching off my phone, shutting down my laptop and getting into my car with a full tank of petrol and just seeing where the road takes me. Have you ever felt like just driving in one direction until you can’t drive anymore and seeing where you land up?
I have. I thought about it when I took the wrong turning and found myself on a new road. If I hadn’t been in a hurry to get to a meeting, I probably would have carried on. I had the thought: What would happen if I just carried on down this road?
Would I come to a dead end? Would I discover a magical place with a new adventure?
That’s life isn’t it?
If we don’t try new things and take that risk, we may never know what is waiting for us.
The fear is normally, what if it is a dead end? Well, then you know. It really is that simple. You know that it’s not for you and you need to try something new; but what a journey it was to get to that point… It’s not a waste of time – it just feels like it sometimes most of the time.
That dead end may also spark something new in you to try something else. That spark may never have been ignited if you didn’t take that risk.
If I think about the course of my life so far, certain things have happened to me that weren’t in “my plans” … and I couldn’t be happier.
There have also been things that have been in “my plans” and haven’t worked or it hasn’t happened and even though I’ve been severly disappointed, in hind sight I am actually thankful (and sometimes a little relieved) that it turned out the way I thought it would.
Stay true to yourself, stick to your essence and don’t be afraid to take risks. Easier said than done, but isn’t that part of the journey?
