Thankful Thursday: My Parents

On the 26th of May 1979, my parents said their vows at St. Catherine’s Church in Bramley, Johannesburg and had their reception at the Sunnyside Hotel, Houghton.

Mom and Dad Wedding 26:05:79Mom and Dad Wedding DayToday is their 37th Wedding Anniversary and tonight, our wedding will be shown on Top Billing. How incredibly special is that?

It’s the first footage we’ll get to see, as we haven’t received our wedding video or photos yet, so I’m nervous and super excited to see how it came out. It also feels exhilarating knowing that many people in South Africa will be watching it with us, as we watch it for the first time too.

Today I am thankful for my parents and their 37 years of marriage. Marriage isn’t something to take lightly and when you find your person, it’s something to treasure and work at, in order to keep each other feeling loved, appreciated, respected and honoured.

Mom and Dad 2015

Mom and Dad at my sister Tandi’s Wedding – 14 March 2015

My parents have been true role models when it comes to relationships and marriage. When times have been tough, they’ve worked through it. They haven’t given up on each other. They’ve grown with each other, but also allowed each other to be individuals with their own hobbies and joys and then share in them. They’re best friends, companions and love each other unconditionally.

In fact, 2 weeks before Sox and I were getting married, I asked a few of my favourite couples for some marriage advice. You should read my parents, especially today… Marriage Advice5a0abb992e85080416e45ae28eaedd99I remember seeing this years ago and it’s resonated with me ever since… fix it.jpgIsn’t that so true? The older generation would fix an appliance or a piece of furniture if it was broken; we come from a generation that when something is broken, we buy a new one. That mentality runs through into relationships too.

My parents have always encouraged my sister and I that if we were to ever get married, we should only ever get married for the right reason.  “You marry your best friend – the person who loves and cherishes you and vice versa.”

I’d always ask my mom in my early twenties: “But how do you know? How do you know when you’ve found the one? How did you know with Dad?” I always found her answer unhelpful, until the day I met Socrates. “You’ll just know! You can’t explain it, you can’t describe it, but when you have found the right person – everything makes sense, the world is brighter and you are able to be your true, authentic, happy self and strive to be even better!”

I get it, Mom. Thank you!2927b9ecc6dc52c33c6f00d33ed5ee63.jpgHappy Anniversary Mom and Dad! We love you so much and are so grateful to have you in our lives!

Tonight, I’ll be glued to my TV screen, watching Top Billing, SABC 3, 19h30  and we invite you to join us as we relive our 2 day Wedding celebration.  The repeat will be on Sunday at 12h30.
