Poros, Part 2

We stayed in Poros for 5 days, so I’m going to jam a few days into one post. That does mean that it’s going to be photo heavy – maybe even more than usual. Sorry for all the scrolling.

The thing with Greece is that because the sun sets so late, people only eat dinner after 10pm and dinner can last past midnight and then you go out for the nightlife. This means that everything starts later. Since we weren’t partying, we always found ourselves being first for breakfast. I actually loved having the hotel balcony all to ourselves.

Not only did we get the pick of the seats, but we got to watch the rowers in practice.breakfast-views-copybailey-schneider-at-breakfast-copyboats-2-copyboats-3-copyboats-copybreakfast-2-copybreakfast-copybreakfast-with-a-view-2-copybreakfast-with-a-view-copycoffee-with-a-view-copyearly-morning-in-poros-copyearly-morning-sunrise-in-poros-copyfull-moon-at-sunrise-copysox-at-breakfast-copy

Some mornings before breakfast, we jumped into the ocean off the pier for a morning swim.sox-in-poros-copysox-jumping-in-poros-copy

Beach essentials ready: Maaji Bikini (this one), Havaiana espadrilles (oh so comfortable), Prada sunglasses from Sunglass Hut and my beach hat. Not photographed – sunscreen and my iPad with the Kindle app. summer-essentials-copyIf we weren’t heading to the private beach at the hotel…Path to Private Beach 1 copy.jpgWe went exploring the other beaches of Poros. We hired a little black and yellow scooter and called it the “Bumble Bee.”Sox and the bumble bee scooter copy.jpgOur Bumble Bee first took us to the Love Bay. We thought this was pretty special, especially on our honeymoon.

We walked down the little path and were quite disappointed with how packed The Love Bay beach was. The deckchairs weren’t only sardined together, but completely booked up. We hopped back on the Bumble Bee and scooted along. The road wound around and around and soon we discovered the Russian Ruins.

Our day went as follows: apply sunscreen, read book (turning over often), swim to cool down, repeat. Tough life, hey?sox-suntanning-copy

There was a little kiosk that served drinks, Freddo cappuccino’s, frappes and basic lunch.

We sat at the table, complete with a baby olive tree and ate freshly grilled souvlaki and greek salad.lunch-at-russian-bay-copy

After our fun in the sun, we decided to continue exploring the island. We had heard about a big beautiful church on the island, so we went in search of it.

We found it nestled up in the hills, protected by tall pine trees and a big entrance gate. There was a big sign on the gate insisting that no swimwear be worn and arms and legs be covered. We were straight off the beach, so out of respect we never entered. Church copy.jpgThere was a smaller church that allowed beachgoers and we entered to light a candle and take a moment to reflect. You could feel the peace that surrounded the area. It’s almost bizarre to say a place is peaceful when Cicada’s screech all day, but it really was serene.church-in-poros-copychurch-candles-copy

We soon scooted back to the hotel. Oh and I forgot to mention that we changed rooms… Where we had been originally, as beautiful as the view was, our room happened to be situated right on the path where everyone walked past to go to the beach and pool. There was no absolutely no privacy at all, so Sox asked if there was another room available and luckily there was.second-hotel-room-copy

One evening, we headed into Poros town to the grocery store to get ingredients for a sunset picnic we were going to have on our hotel balcony.poros-sunset-copysunset-2-copy

We opened a bottle of local wine and picked at cold meats and cheeses, plump olives and bit into juicy tomatoes that dripped down our chins. It felt really good to just sit on the balcony, eating and laughing. Picnic copy.jpg

It also happened to be Full Moon, so after our picnic, we took a walk down to the pier to watch it rise and light up the townfull-moon-rising-copyfull-moon-4-copyfull-moon-in-poros-copybailey-schneider-at-full-moon-poros-copy

I tried to do a long exposure (without a tripod) in the next 2 photos. Look at the full moons reflection in the ocean – it’s all squiggly like that from the long exposure and the moving water.full-moon-reflection-copyfull-moon-relfections-copy

The next evening we waited for the  water taxi…sox-and-bailey-honeymoon-2-copydjsox-in-poros-copy…and headed to the Poseidon Restaurant. greek-restaurant-copyWhen we had been in town earlier, we had seen Octopus hanging outside. Some people might be completely freaked out and put off by this, but it’s truly delicious. If you see octopus hanging outside, you know it’s going to be good. Octopus is served in most restaurants, but if it’s not hanging outside, then it’s probably frozen. They hang the freshly caught octopus in the sun, which starts preparing it for the cooking. It doesn’t smell, there are no flies – it’s quite the enigma.hanging-octopus-2-copyhanging-octopus-copyhanging-octopus-3-copygrilled-octopus-copy

We ordered the octopus – crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. I’m a sucker for them! #PunsCantBeHelpedoctopus-3-copy

We ordered the local rosé and the mixed grill too…meat-plate-copyposeidon-restaurant-copy

After a delicious meal, we walked through the cobbled streets and along the line of boats ensuring we took it all in for our last night.port-copyporos-at-night-2-copy

We had the best time in special Poros and I have no doubt we will be back one day!

I have just 2 more Greek blog posts for you… From Poros, we went to a Greek village up in the mountains and then to a coastal town, Stoupa with water so clear I felt like it was one giant swimming pool.

Thanks for reading and for your lovely comments – I am really enjoying sharing this – I not only get to relive the trip, but keep it as a travel diary for one day too.

The year I turned 21, my sister also turned 18, my dad 60 and it was my parent’s 25th wedding anniversary. We decided that this was quite the occasion, and took a 3 week holiday in Greece – we spent one week between Athens and ancient Olympea, and then the rest of the time on a yacht on the Ionian, sailing between islands.

Your photos just keep bringing me back 9 years, and making me wish for another trip like that. It was absolutely perfect!
