New Find: Audio Books

I caught up with a school friend, Melissa the other day and we could have spent hours chatting! It was like no years had gone by.  One of the things she introduced me to is Audio Books. They’re not new by any means, but I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to get on this train.

I admittedly still have not got completely into Podcasts, which is actually weird considering I’m in radio. I just haven’t found any that have really grab me. Perhaps this will be my gateway into the podcast world, who knows?!

This is not an endorsement of any kind. I’m just simply telling you what I’ve discovered, thanks to Milly. I downloaded the Audible app, which works with Amazon. It’s $14,95 a month, which is R200 and it gives you one credit. One credit = 1 audio book. Still cheaper than a physical book. If you wish to download more, then you buy the books you’d like, but they all work out roughly to what a book at Exclusive would cost you, maybe cheaper.

You can also send a book to a friend – I think you’re allowed to do this once, so Melissa sent me Jeffrey Archer’s Kane and Abel.

I’m a big fan of crime thrillers, and my favourite author is James Patterson. I used my first credit to download James Patterson & David Ellis’ Murder House. I’m hooked.

There’s a male and female narrator, which makes it interesting. I also love that you can play an audio sample, so that you can hear the narrator and whether you like the voice or not.

Oh and I did have a giggle… because I’m clearly mature… at the sex scene. Our narrator really got the heavy breathing right.

I love listening at any chance I get and as Melissa pointed out, this might be exactly what I need when I breastfeed in the early hours of the morning.

Do you listen to audiobooks? Anything that’s blown you away?

I love audiobooks! They really make me feel less guilty when it comes to reading because I can hardly keep my eyes open for two pages when I start to read an actual book. I know, it’s bad!! I now get through more than one book a year – lol! I’m also not into podcasts – nothing that grabs me there. I did listen to the first season of Serial though, which was good but that’s about it.

Which audio books would you recommend?

Never listened to an audio book in my life LOL
I did enjoy Murder House though, as James Patterson is my favourite author too!

Can’t believe we both love James Patterson. I loved all his books and actually keep/collect every one of the ‘Women’s Murder Club’ series. Sorry, I’m too old fashioned, I need to hold an actual book, smell the pages etc. I could never follow listening to an audio book, I’m far too simple minded for that, haha. Happy, um, listening? 😉

I love J.P! I agree – nothing beats the traditional book – but being able to listen to a book, whilst driving or doing chores is like killing 2 birds with one stone! I think there’s space for both 🙂 Thanks for reading Wayne

Ah this seems like a fabulous idea – I never have the time to sit down and read without dozing off, so being able to listen in the car or when out and about or while cooking dinner would be amazing. I think I need to download this!

I’d love to get into audio books more but I find them expensive especially at the rate I go through them. I’m in my car for two hours every day (to and from work now that I live in JHB) and can finish a book in one week. For me to buy a new book weekly is really going really make my bank balance cry! So podcasts have been the best thing for me because they are free. It was slow getting in to them and finding the right ones but now I am hooked! I listen to everything from self help to crime to life stories and I love it!

Hey Kate, you definitely make a valid point with the amount of time spent in a car vs the expense of a new book weekly!
I don’t spend a lot of time in the car, so it’s 15 minute gaps and then gaps for chores… When I breastfeed at night, it will definitely come in handy… but yes Podcasts do make more sense!
Which ones would you recommend. I’d love to get into them, but I’ve struggled to find the right ones.

You’ve probably seen the 2 for 1 sale on at Audible?

I wholeheartedly second the Trevor Noah recommendation!

    My favourites in audiobooks are:
Narrator – Susan Eriksen – she’s a maestro at her job.
Authors – Sandra Brown and JD Robb’s works.
Audiobook – Room by Emma Donoghue

Bailey, have you listened to TED Talk podcasts? Bet you’ll love it….

Oh exciting… I hadn’t seen the 2 for 1 sale! Thanks for letting me know!
I’m going to pop these onto my list – thank you for sharing!
I have listened to one or 2 TED Talks, but haven’t given them a serious chance, so I will do that too!
Thanks so much for the helpful info.
      Have a great weekend,

LOVE AUDIO BOOKS! They keep me sane on during my drive through from Blouberg to Claremont. You can also buy 3 credits that work out to be about ±R500 for them all so A LOT cheaper then buying a book from Exclusive Books. Enjoy 🙂

Ah that’s awesome! I haven’t looked at the cost of extra credits! Thanks for that!
