Facebook reminded me that it was the first day of Autumn on March 20. When I first saw it, I blinked. Twice.
I feel like Cape Town has only really had 3 months of Summer. Sox was telling me that he remembers growing up in CT and spending September school holidays on the beach. Now I can’t imagine even wearing open shoes in November because it’s still Wintery cold, while all my friends and family in Joburg are sweltering from September.
Thing is, since returning from Honeymoon I’ve actually noticed the season change – even before Facebook reminded me. The leaves are becoming gold, orange and red and there are a lot more leaves on the ground on my morning walks. In the early mornings I could usually pad into the kitchen barefoot to make my tea, but now I need to slip on a light robe and little slippers because there is a slight nip in the air.
Even the air smells different. Admittedly that could still be my cold.
Ironically, we will now have a heat wave, because I’ve posted this.
There is something magical about a new season though, even if we’re not exactly ready.
I always feel like a major clean up… Sure, there’s spring cleaning, but I feel the urge in Autumn too. I feel like it’s a chance to clear out what doesn’t serve me anymore and what brings me no joy.
I get really excited about the new fashion too. I always pack away my different seasons thanks to space issues. However, out of sight out; of mind means that when it is time to swop seasons out, it’s like discovering new clothes all over again! I love my leather jackets and my boots, so I’m glad they’ll be coming back – just not too soon please.
I’ve also learned that it’s this time that’s the BEST to go clothes shopping. I always buy my boots and coats now. I feel like the very best come out early in the season, when most of us are still too hot to try on winter clothes, but by the time the season is in full swing, the beautiful coats and boots are sold out.
I actually bought these tan leather ankle boots from Aldo- it was the easiest purchase ever. I walked past, saw them in the window, diverted, asked for my size, tried them on and paid for them. Done in less than 5 minutes. This black wrap coat from Woolworths also came home with me. It comes in a tan colour too, but I already have a similar one that I love, pictured here.Besides the fashion, I’ve created a short list of what I’d love to do this Autumn:
1.I want to perfect a delicious and healthy soup recipe.
2. I want to find a low carb, sugar free ginger bread biscuit recipe.
3. I want to create a Christmas bed/blanket fortress in our TV room and binge watch movies and series. What series are you watching at the moment? We are watching Greys Anatomy, Quantico, PLL, Blind spot and Shades of Blue (very far behind) and as I type this, I can’t believe we actually manage all of this with our schedules.
4. I want to roast chestnuts. I remember trying roasted chestnuts for the first time as a little 9 year old in London and in Switzerland. I have no idea how difficult or easy it is, but I’m determined to find out. I think the first challenge might actually be finding chestnuts. Any ideas?
What is your favourite season and what do you like to do in Autumn? Perhaps I should be adding apple picking and other exciting things – any tips?
